The narrow streets of this busy town climb the steep hill on the west bank of the River Torridge, at the point where it begins to widen to form it's estuary. The towns most famous sight is its bridge over the Torridge; it is 677 ft long has 24 arches and incorporates part of an original 15th C. stone bridge. Several of the buildings in Bridgeland Street date from the 17th C. The town was the principal port of North Devon from the 16th C. when Sir Richard Greville, Captain of the Revenge, secured a charter for Bideford from Queen Elizabeth I - until the 18th C. when it's overseas trade declined.

Located on the Cornwalls rugged north coast the village of Braunton is claimed, locally, to be the largest village in England. Situated half way between Barnstable and Woolacombe it has to the west a noted nature reserve with two well-marked and interesting nature trails leading across the extensive sandy dunes known as the Braunton Burrows. At Baggy Point a little to the north soaring cliffs offer stupendous views over Croyde Bay to the South and Morte Bay to the north.

The county town of Devon stands on rising ground on the bank of the River Exe.This remains an historic city with a cathedral, though comparatively small, one of the most attractive in England. Much remains of Exeter’s medieval walls and it’s streets following their original Roman course. The high street, only 5 minutes walk from the River, holds some fascinating buildings; the guildhall, of mediaeval origin has an ornamental upper story resting on a row of granite columns, and is said to be the oldest municipal building still in use in England. There are 13th century underground passages that can still be visited, and there is a handsome 17th C Customs House on the Quayside. There are also several museums and art galleries and a flourishing university.
